Biography

Chanel Lisa-Cavel Smith (b. 1995, Jamaica) is a visual artist based in Florida. Her art practice is exegetical in nature and is conveyed through abstract painting, jewelry making and emblematic logo design.

PAINTINGS

Chanel's abstract paintings employs evocative movement guiding the viewer into deep contemplation and repose. Confident brush strokes sweep the canvas narrating a visual story that's best understood spiritually and emotionally. The ambition of her paintings are meant to aid a worshipful experience—encouraging the viewer to meditate through a biblical lens and to connect their personal stories with the colours and gestures at play.

"I view gestural mark-making as a vocabulary and utilize it to create exegetical paintings intersecting my faith in Christ. Rooted in the conventions of abstract expressionism, I embrace marks that form by chance married with deliberate and thoughtful movement to convey specific narratives. Abstract painting feels like the outward expression of internal prayers. I view creation as a fulfilling collaborative experience with God and a privilege to reflect His nature as Creator. Thus, I approach my work as a sacred vocation with the given liberty of childlikeness in exploration."

JEWELRY & LOGOS

Chanel's jewelry work is a combination of eclecticism and statement minimalism exhibiting her relish for contrasting styles through her primary medium of polymer clay. Her logo designs act as a vehicle that transports a message. She understands the spiritual weight of a business venture and creates impactful designs that declare businesses and organizations as set-apart in their respective industries.

ABOUT BETH AUTUMN

Beth Autumn is a ministerial creative house and the artistic pseudonym of Chanel Lisa-Cavel Smith. Drawing inspiration from the Hebrew meaning of  'beth' (house of God), her desire is for this to reckon as a figurative dwelling place, where God is worshiped through artistic expression. Autumn represents the season in which Chanel was born and the rich revelations that can be extracted from harvest time. Like the shulamite in Song of Songs, Chanel's hope is that fruit from her gifts can be found here. She believes that being an artist is a sacred vocation and uses her artistry ministerially.
